Default 89 Evinrude XP150 clicking out of gear???

LOOoong time lurker, new member. I bought this '79 Ranger 1850VS last month. It has an 89 XP150 Evinrude on it. It was last tagged for 2003, so I am assuming it hasnt been used in a while. On my first trip to the lake I noticed a problem. Once in a while when I am traveling at low speed..."idle" it will start making a loud click sound. I beleive its trying to pop out of gear. I can run that exact same speed when throttling down and not have any problems. If I go from neutrel to idle forward it does it about 50% of the time. Now before you all tell me I must not be giving it enough throttle, I assure you I am. Its my 3rd boat. I never had this problem before. The only way I can keep it from happening is to go to 2000 rpm then pull back to "Idle forward". "I think this tends to un-nerve people at the docks" I get alot of dirty looks? Im wondering, is this the shift dog? I am kind of leaning more towards some kind of linkage being out of adjustment? Im not really sure how to check??? I dont even know if there is a simple way to adjust that??? Can any one help me?? Also, does any one use hydro foils on there bass boat? Unless I am doing 20 mph my bow is pointed at Jupiter. Im afraid Im going to pancake some one because I cant see infront of me. Any suggestions?

It very well could be your linkage out of adjustment. It could also be the shift rod height isn't set right. To check your shift linkage take the shift cable loose at the motor and shift the motor by hand. If it stays in gear without any clicking then you may have found the problem. Put the shift linkage in neutral by hand and put your controls in neutral. Adjust the trunion on the shift cable so the cable ends fits the shift linkage in that position. See if it works now.
