I have a 1940 2 1/2hp Johnson seahorse outboard. The model # is TD20. I have no literature on it. Could you please tell me the oil fuel ratio and where I can get tune up parts? Thank you

A TD20 ought to be a 5hp engine. A 2.5 would be a HD20. You can use a 24:1 mix of 87 octane gas and TC-W3 rated outboard oil on either engine. Which tune-up parts are you after? Some are hard to find, but if you're handy there are solutions. Eg, carb float, coils, etc. The water pump doesn't work like a modern one and as long as the impeller isn't falling apart you can continue to use it.

If you cant get your points cleaned up and regapped properly, you can get new ones from laingsoutboards.com but they're pricey. They have the condensors too. For coils, you'll have to look for a good used set. Try tcoutboards.com.

I was using a 50:1 and it was fouling plugs, I did pull the fly wheel & set the points to 20 they were not to bad.It will run for awhile & then just die the carburetor does leak some,it's a downdraft type,maybe the rings are bad but I dont no what the compression should be. yesterday I had it on the water pushing a 16 ft runabout going fine and all of a sudden it just died, I pulled the plugs and one was fouled and the other was just black but not fouled. I just wish I could get some literature on it, Im using ngk plugs.

Check that model number for sure and I can give you information on the plugs, etc, and info on where you can find service literature. If they're fouling either their too cold or you're running too rich. If the carb is flooding it may be time for a rebuild. If you've found the float inside it is crumbling, there's a fix for it. Try to save the gaskets, etc, so you don't have to cut your own. Compression should be around 90psi or better, but it doesn't matter if it's somewhat less. The main thing is that it's even between the cylinders.

Junkman your model number doesn't compute. The old Johnnies had two letters in from of the number. Yours would be either HA-10 or HA-15 or HD-10 or 15 if it's a 1940. Take a look at where the powerhead meets the midsection. Sometimes the model number is punched into the metal there.

If that is a serial number you've got there, that suggests 1949. Which limits the model numbers to HD-25 (2.5hp) and TD-20 (5hp). Any luck on that model number?

My mistake, I meant to say serial number. Thank you very much. Now at least I know the correct year! The model # is TD-20,and all along I thought it was a 1940 2.5 hp,That's what the guy I traded a chainsaw for told me,It was his grandfathers and he is deceased, So I dont know were the literature/manual for it is.
