What year did electronic ignition appear in E/J 90 and 115?

Considering adding a ski boat to the stable this winter - probably late 70's to mid 80's with an outboard (likely and Evinrude or Johnson mostly because of the tech support this board offers).

What year(s) were points phased out and electronic ignitions introduced? Prefer the more modern version.

Thanks for any information. (searched but can't find anything)

Some of the late 70's V4's used a battery CD system and had points as a trigger with very little voltage running thru them. In 1973, and we assume this is the type motor your looking for, they went to a magneto CD ignition.

That would probably be the years to look for (73 & newer) since the gearcase parts for 72's and older are getting a bit harder to come by.

As Dhadley states, the Magneto Capacitance Discharge ignition system that is used today in the Evinrude/Johnson models came into existence in 1973.

Thank you gentlemen. Now, if I could just get from Arizona to Michigan to buy that sweet '79 Carlson with the Evinrude 115... (and back to work on Monday)
