Gear oil 1973 Johnson 20hp

I have jusy purchased a 1973 20hp Johnson. I would like to change the gear oil and would like to know what kind of gear oil to put in. I have type-c SAE 75, but some of the forums suggest SAE 90. Can someone clarify for me. Thanks

Should be SAE 90, if I'm not mistaken. Service manual should say, though. That, or your local dealer. They sell 90 weight at my local Wal-mart for about 10 bucks.

and use "outboard gear oil" not just regular gear oil. Outboard stuff is anti-foaming and handles water better in the event of a seal leak (so I've read). If the stuff you take out is milky, then there's water in it, and you've got a leak somewhere. Cdn tire sells "Nautilis" stuff that's fine. It doesn't take "type C", that's for the older electric shifts. While you're there, buy one of those little pumps. It screws into a 1L bottle, then screws into the fill/drain hole (the lower one). Pump until oil comes out the vent hole (the upper one) and your done.

Aprreciate the quick reponse. Purchased the Nautlis oil and a pump wil get to it tomorrow. Thanks for the info.
