Hi, i have a 1975 Johnson 50 hp sea horse. Recently it decieded that its going to only have spark when it wants to, so therefore it will fire sometimes and be running then suddenly quit. You wait a little while and be cranking it over and suddenly it will have spark again. Any idea's?

Welcome!!

The next time it loses spark, disconnect the red cannon plug on the powerhead for the main wiring harness. Check spark by jumping the starter solenoid. Be careful to just check for spark. If you start it, you'll have no way to shut it down except by flooding it.

If you have spark with the harness disconnected, the problem is forward of the engine. Could be the key switch. Could be the emergency stop switch or the circuit for either.

Let us know.

Could also try disconnecting the kill switch wire from the power pack and check again for spark without disconnecting anything else. I believe it is the Black/Yellow wire but consult your book to be sure. If you have spark with that disconnected your problem is in your control set like Dhadley stated.
Check the spark plug boot(cover) for rust and check the coil wire for signs of dry rot and/or cracking. If you see either replace them. The parts are cheap and will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Hope this helps.
