Raising motor up on transom

What do you guys us to help lift the motor so as to raise it up some on the transom? I'd like to do it myself without taking it to the marine dealer & him charging me, but I don't have anything but manual labor to work with. Thanks.

I use the loader on my tractor. You dont have one I bet...well shucks.<br /><br />Then in that case, Idd get a 12 pack of beer and invite a couple buddys over for a raseing the motor party.<br /><br />Raise the motor first....Otherwise they will just drink your beer and go home....then party hardie.<br /><br />Good luck!

Another way that works well is to use the trailer jack. Jack the trailer until the tang is at its lowest. Then put a block under the motore and, while supporting the motor so it won't topple, loosen the two bottom mounting bolts (the ones on the slotted part of the mounting bracket) and remove the two top bolts. Now carefully raise the tang of the trailer with the jack and the motor will be lifted. Position it so as the top holes align to where you want them and re-insert the bolts. It helps to have two peole do this.

In some cases you can take out the top 2 bolts and leave the bottom 2 in if they are in slots on the motor. Then put a block or blocks under the skeg and jack the front of the trailor up to lower the transom of the boat. Need 1 or 2 people helping you.

What are the odds? hehe That is a good way to do it. I have used a long heavy pry bar to raise the motor, using 1/4 inch shims of wood to get to the height I want it. Use a wood shim under the pry bar to protect the transom. Works great, and can be done with one person. I personally like goodoleboy's second solution. :) BWJ

Johnlowe - try this method,<br /><br />Jack under the skeg, with wood block between.<br /><br />Tie a line to lower unit, feed it under boat, pull tight and secure to trailer winch leg (this takes strain off motor hydraulics and keeps leg from swinging out when jacking).<br /><br />Remove top transom bolts and loosen bottom bolts.<br /><br />Raise motor to desired level with jack, insert and tighten all bolts.<br /><br />Takes ten minutes tops, and works every time.

How do you make sure no water gets in the bolt holes after you rase the motor? 5200? What if you want to lower it back down?<br />Mac

Same holes on transom, different holes on motor's transom bracket.

First, awsome homer clip. I am refering to after you disturb the bolts how do you seal up the transom. (Same holes in boat)Mine have a perfect squish of what I believe is 5200 on both sides.<br /><br />Mac

Use a bit more 5200 Mac. <br />Shouldn't be to much hassle to force some more round the bolts before you tighten them, should it?

Sorry, misunderstood your question. Stillfishing answered your question. 5200 is the best, but "LifeCaulk" works well also. If you ever want to remove your transom bolts, you may have to drive them out since they are essentially glued in with the sealant.
