Johnson Ficht?

So I'm buying oil for my carb Johnson @ a dealer, and in his inventory is a 1998 Johnson 175...and in big red letters on the side is "Ficht Fuel-injected." On inquiry, the dealer told me, "Yes, they did make them for a while, and everyone had a lot of trouble with them." (yeah, she's a smooth-talkin' sales lady...too dang honest to be in boat sales).

Well. Do I feel stupid. First, let me apologize to everyone I've told, maybe some of them on this forum, that Johnson Fichts never existed (I thought only Evinrudes were Fichts).

Secondly (I'm humble now), what's the story? How many and in what years and what horsepower did they make? They're not referenced in the 2000 OMC catalog, so maybe only a year or two?

Re: Johnson Ficht?

For sure in 1997, 98, and I think 99 the Ficht was available in both the Evinrude and Johnson lines as 150hp and 175hp models. I had a 1998 150hp, had all the updates including cylinder heads, which always resulted in lower top speeds and less holeshot. In 2000 with less than 60 hours on the powerhead, I was given a complete new 2000 powerhead. In 2002, with 48 hours and a scored cylinder I traded that POS off on an I/O.

The Ficht injection system was on the smaller HP engines as well. I own a 98 Johnson 115hp Ocean Runner.

Re: Johnson Ficht?

There were Johnson FICHTS for 1997 and 1998. In 1999 Johnson and Evinrude was restructured and had different products. Evinrude had the FICHT and the 4 strokes. Johnson had the traditional 2 strokes.
