mercruiser 3.0L shifting trouble

Hello,<br />I have a 1984 3.0L sterndrive on chaparral 172 bow rider.The forward and reverse are both hard to engage.I Have to wiggle the throttle back and forth,eventually it will go in gear(forward/reverse).I have not had the lower unit worked on or taken apart.Any advice is appreciated.Thanx

you should be in the I/O forum<br /><br />your shift cables are binding the lower is the most likely<br /><br />but it could be a problem with the control also you will have to check each one<br /><br />this will give you and idea whats going on<br /><br /> http://mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm <br /><br /><br />tommays
