"INTRODUCES" is an easily remembered 10-letter word with no repeated letters - works great for a relatively easy 10-digit code...
- Scott

What system did they use before 1980, if any, or was the year just put into the model number numerically?

Re: Evinrude year, is this true?

Sort of semi-logical numbering system for Evinrudes in the post-war period. Different semi-logical system for Johnsons.
eg, for the JW (3hp) Johnson:
JW-13 3hp '57
JW-14 3hp '58
JW-15 3hp '59
For the same 'Rude:
3022 - 3024 '57
3026 - 3028 '58
3030 - 3032 '59

But there's plenty of exceptions. JW-17 could be either a '61 or '62 3hp engine. And a '58 18hp is a 15024 rather than an 18024. And 40hp 'Rudes were 35*** until someone got around to changing them to 40***s in '63. The 35 had become a 40 in 1960...

There was a change in the '70s for Johnsons. They went something like 25R70 for a 1970 25hp Ropestart. Very convienent!
