Helle every body.<br /><br />First sorry for my bad english but i'm a french man who practice very few time this language.<br /><br />I have a 40 hp johnson motors 2 cyl of year 69.<br /><br />The first time i used it (the last week) it seems to run good. But with the time it seems to have less and less power. <br />What have I to do ?<br />Thank you for helping a little french man who have some trouble...

Welcome to Iboats!<br /><br />You need to do a few things with this motor before you try and use it again. <br /><br />1. Do a compression test. Both cylinders should be (hopefully) above 80 psi and be within 10 psi of each other.<br /><br />3. Check the spark. It should be able to jump at least a 1/4" gap (normally it's 3/8" but the bigtwins sometimes can't quite do it) with a bright blue snapping arc.<br /><br />4. Change the impeller, this is a must with any new(to you) engine you get. They need to be replaced every couple of seasons, and since you just got it, you don't know when it was replaced last.<br /><br />5. Pull the carb off and rebuild it with a new kit from the dealer. Make sure that it has a plastic float in it, the old cork ones don't like todays alcohol based fuels.<br /><br />6. (probably should have been 1!) get a manual. It's full of really important info that we just can't cover properly on the forums.<br /><br />7. Drain the gearcase and check for emulsified oil/water. If it's all ok, refill with BRP Premium Blend gearcase oil. ONLY. Normal gearcase oil won't work properly with these gearcases. Put new O-rings on the drain and level screws.<br /><br />Good luck with it, and as I'm sure to have left something out, Paul Moir and/or CATransplant will probably be along soon to help out. These two guys are wizards with these motors!

Thank you for your help. I'm very happy to find someone who can help me. I was sure that nobaody knew these old engines (which are fabulous i think).<br /><br />Can you tell me how i can find a manual and bring it to FRANCE?<br />The oil in the gear case was change last year and repace by a good one but the engine had no run since this time (i had no licence at this moment) then i think it is no the probleme (the impeller turns well when the engine is off) but i will try this. <br /><br />The oil mix for carburation is 3.5 % ? more or less?<br />i use these quantity.<br /><br />Just one more quastion. I see in the carb when i put the maximum power, than the air entry is not open to his maximum. Is it the expication of the lower power ? You have to visually inspect the impeller. Even if all the veins are broken off the impeller hub, it will still turn, but won't pump water.<br /><br />I am not sure if this engine has a throttle stop linkage to the gear shift, but With engine inition switched on but NOT running, put into forward gear (requires ignition to be on to activate solenoid) and advance throttle linkage as far as it will go, to the wide open position. Look at the throttle valve inside the carb; it should be wide open. If not, you need to do a link and sync procedure as outlined on some other posts here.

The fuel/oil mixture on that engine is 50/1, one (1) pint of 50/1 oil to six (6) gallons of gasoline.<br /><br />As above, check the compression. Remove the spark plugs and rig up a spark tester. Also as above, the spark on that model should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!<br /><br />The throttle butterfly...... Notice on the top portion of the powerhead on the starboard side, there is a steel rod leading from the vertical throttle arm to the carburetor roller assembly. Also notice that there is a brass sleeve on that rod with a set screw.<br /><br />Now, with the engine NOT RUNNING, spin the prop and put it into forward gear. Now move the armature plate under the flywheel (the plate with the coils, points etc on it) to its full spark advance position..... but only to that full spark advance position, no further as we do not want to engage the carburetor movement.<br /><br />Now, loosen that set screw in the brass connector that's on that steel rod. Use a finger to gently press on the end of that steel rod to eliminate any play but do not press hard enough to engage the carburetor. Slide that brass collar back up against the vertivcal throttle arm's clevis and tighten that set screw.<br /><br />At that setting, when you advance the throttle further, the spring you see at the top of the vertical throttle arm, will alow the vertical throttle arm to move further and since the brass collar is right against it at that point, that forces the throttle butterfly to open fully.<br /><br />Let us know what you find. Your english is quite good..... my french is non existent.

Sorry but i have not the same unit system, and i don't understand all y'ou've said ("one pint of 50/1 oil to six gallons")<br />-> how much gallon of oil per gallon of fuel and i'll will convert it in metric system.<br /><br />Thank you for your help. Actually you just said it. 1 gallon of oil to 50 gallons of fuel.

1 litre of TCW-3 oil to 50 litres of fuel.

If your fuel tank is 23 Litres, (5 Imperial gallons)<br />you would add 500 ml of TCW3 oil.

Thank you bill,<br />you confirm what i supposed.<br /><br />I have my trouble again concerning the buttfly. I have done what y've said but it is don't opened fully ( max 1/3 i think)<br /><br />And if i try to open it fully, when i put the gear to the neutral position it is not fully closed. <br />It is strange because the power command is the original one and the first time i use it it seems to be good by i had not verified it (i run to 22 knots)<br />Then i tried many ways unsuccesfully.<br /><br />This is the fisrt thing.The second i will check the compresion on tuesday and i will tell you what are the compression in the two cylinder (i hope they are correct, 'cause i have no much money....)<br /><br />a + <br />You can also say "Au revoir"<br />(it egal to say goodby in english! your first french lesson...)
