I just changed the lube for the lower unit this motor, and am beginning to wonder if the guy at the marine store sold me the wrong lube. He sold me Evinrude Johnson "Ultra-HPF Gearcase Lube". Looking on the back of the tube, it says for 1973 or after Evinrude/Johnson. It specifically warns against using it with electric shift gearcases, such as 1962-1972 models. For the latter, it says to use Evinrude/Johnson "Premium Blend Gearcase Lube". The motor is a 1964, but I'm sure it doesn't have electric shift because it is always in gear.

I'm not sure what to think here. They do quite a bit of repair work there and man I spoke with (I believe he is the owner) seemed to know his stuff. However, when the old lube came out it was much thicker in viscosity than this stuff. Basically, it slid out of the lower unit and stayed where it fell in the pan. This stuff is much more of a liquid.

On the motor itself it says what type of lube to use, but the one word I need is worn off. All I can tell is it is 3500 to 4500 rpm.

Does anyone know if this is the right lube? I checked at www.evinrude.com but couldn't find anything there which would help.
