1975 Johnson 50hp forward control unit

I have had to dismantle my forward control unit (1975 Johnson 50 hp)to replace a broken shift linkage. I am now unable to re-assemble the unit as I can't get the detent ball and spring into place. Do I need a special tool, is there a trick technique or is it a job for an expert mechanic.<br />This is sooo frustrating.<br />I will appreciate any helpful hints.<br />Regards,<br /> JayVee

Welcome to the forum!<br /><br />Those little devils are tricky thats for sure. Its bein awhile since I did it.<br /><br />But if memory serves, Put it back together with just the spring dont tighten it all the way down.<br /><br />Then take a flat tiped screw driver and push the spring back inside under the lever.<br /><br />Then take the little ball and slide it down beside screw driver blade and press into detent pocket.<br /><br />It goes something like that. Mabey the lever goes on last. but the screw driver will give you the edge.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks Lee (Goodoleboy), I haven't had time to try it yet it's winter down here and I've been waiting for a bit of sun. Today looks OK so I'm off to have a go.<br />Will let you Know how it goes.<br />Regards,<br /> JayVee

Hi again,<br />Your method didn't work as there is no room to get a screwdriver and finger in at the same time. I swore a bit then sat and worked out what was needed and came up with a tool made from 2 strips of aluminium forming a sort of specialised pliers. One jaw pushes the ball and spring into the housing while the other hooks onto the outside of the housing, Worked a treat!<br />Regards,<br />JayVee
