I have a 1995 Johnson 150. Last time I used it last month it worked great. 2 days ago I was on the water at almost full throttle and the engine just quit running. No puttering or spitting it just stopped running. When I tried to restart it would just turn over, no backfire or attempt to start. I got towed back. After I put it on the trailer it cranked and ran for about 5 seconds then died. I tried again last night and it did the same thing. I changed the plugs, there is fuel at the fuel rails, the plugs are firing when I remove them but the motor doesnt sound like its even trying to run. Please give me some guidance on what to do next. THanks, Doo

Take a fuel sample.Holding a spark plug to the block to check spark is no test at all

Does it only fire/run when you have the starter motor engaged?

Im not sure what you mean but I can crank the engine it will run good for about 5 seconds then die. It will not sputter it just stops. It will not restart for several hours then it only runs for 5 seconds again. The fuel is only 2 weeks old. If seeing a spark is no test at all then how do I know if I have a good spark. thanks.

I think I see what you mean now. I only have to engage the starter for a second and the engine will crank, start, and run for 5 seconds without the starter being engaged. thanks

The reason I ask is that the powerpack normally receives its power supply from a power coil in the stator, but during cranking there is a separate power supply fed from the starter solenoid. If the power coil is faulty, sometimes the engine will only run when the starter is energised. Not your problem.

The way to check spark properly is to use a spark tester. There's been quite a few posts on how to do this. Do a search to find them.

As R.Johnson says, check the fuel for water contamination. Otherwise, could be an ignition problem. There's a good ignition trouble shooting guide for the OIS2000 which can be downloaded from www.rapair.com.

Check your fuel & spark first. Check your compression also.

Ok now I checked the fuel, its fine. I bought a spark tester. I started the engine first to see if it was still doing the same thing, it ran 5 seconds then died. Tried to get a spark and now nothing. I waited a day and now it wont even start. I am getting no spark on any wires. I have not started the rapair.com yet, havent had time yet. Would yall lean to the powerpack now or do I have to go through more troubleshoooting. Thanks very much

Okay, I found another post that said to unplug the big red plug and when I did I get a strong spark. The engine does not run but I assume that is because the plug is not together. Should I replace the key switch or the deadman? thanks
