74 Evinrude Jumps out of gear

I have a 40 horse evinrude. It ran fine a week ago. Today before leaving for the lake I disconnected the throttle cable and the shift cable was going to lubricate them but didn't have right lub. I reconnected the cables and went for the water. On the first take off at half throttle it jumped out of gear.I throttled up again same thing happened. I was wondering if something in the shifting assembly came loose.I'm certain I reconnected them properly. I've had this motor for 6 years I just ordered the manual! Didn't need it till today!!Any suggestions?

You probably just need to readjust your cable. Try shifting it manually and see if it stays in gear. you might need to take a buddy along for this.

Should the lever be held forward while throttling?

We tried manually shifting with the shift cable disconnected it did not work. I need to know if I should hold the shift arm forward while throttling? Any suggestions? Thanks
