My friend has a 76 70 hp Evinrude that chokes at takeoff. When he give it the gas to take off it stumbles. If he gives it a shot of the electric choke it takes off. I am thinking that it may be a little lean at idle and that it chokes at the transition.

I briefly looked under the cowl at the carbs but could not determine if there is a mixture adjustment for the low speed idle as there is a big air thing over the front of the carbs.

His carbs probably need a teardown but I would like ot see if we can improve the takeoff at least until the end of the season. I have too much to do right now to tear down and clean his carbs.

Am I on the right track??

The carburetors need removing, cleaning, and rebuilding.... Now!

Clogged carburetors result in a lean running mixture. This will result in piston damage etc.

Is the takeoff problem a sign of clogged carb?? It is not my boat so my control of this is limited.. He is not much for preventative maintenance so I do what I can to make sure he does not ruin something.. If this is a sign of a lean condition, I can probably get him to commit to pulling the thing offline and breaking them down.

I had him put a can of B-12 in the gas and it improved the takeoff but it still has problems..

Thanks for the help..

The only way to clean carbs are to remove them, soak them and blow out every little orfice with compressed air. Pay particular attention to the fuel jets. A clogged carb can cause a takeoff problem, but as Joe said, it can also make it run lean and ruin the engine.
