I recently purchased a 40 yo Johnson 6HP motor from a very generous local fisherman.
I have some issues regarding the use of the motor. When the motor is in the neutral state, it usuallly reves up high, however when it is in gear it does not, and it doesn't go very fast when it is even at wide open throttle. My Guess is that the gas that I was using is very old (Came with the motor when I bought it). The spark plugs are new, and I'm thinking about cleaning the gas filter.
Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks
Ray

Re: Beginner Question On Johnson 6HP

Welcome to iboats. :)

Check your sparkplugs to see if they're burning differently. The clean one usually indicates a problem with that cylinder, either lack of spark, or maybe a head gasket leak. Could be other things too, but those would be the first I'd check ... to make sure it's running on both cylinders. A bad head gasket might allow water droplets to collect on the sparkplug, but not always. Also, smell the gas. You'll know bad gas when you smell it.

I pulled out both plugs, and i found some oil on the threads of both (I think it's anti sieze) and also found some black (oil?) on the plug itself of one of the cylinders.

Re: Beginner Question On Johnson 6HP

Well i took the motor.. put it in a garbage can filled with water and ran it in gear. It revs up very high. So the question is, am i having too much load on the boat? or are the cylinders low in compression?
