I have a 1969 Johnson 55hp model #55ES69. The motor had been sitting for about a year and a half when I inherited it. I got it started and had been running for about a minute and a half when it shut off. (No sputter or noises). I checked the spark after it shut off and there was none. (There was great spark when I had checked it prior to running). I bought new spark plugs and tried again and there is still no spark. The plug wires look a little frayed but could this be the cause of the sudden loss of spark? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lost Spark

On a 1969 everything could be the problem. (I have a 1969 85 hp) You NEED a factory service manual and should go through the whole battery of electrical component tests. Usually at a minimum, the wiring is all deteriorated inside it's insulation. You could have anything wrong from a bad battery, to a cracked coil or a bad amplifier, or as simple as a loose ground. :)
