COOLING PROBLEMS

I HAVE A 1977 15HP EVINRUDE THAT WHEN STARTED WATER FLOWS FROM "TELL TALE" SPOUT. WHEN MOTOR IS WARM IT STOPS AND POWER HEAD GETS HOT. I CHANGED WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT. THE TUBE WAS PLUGGED BUT I WAS ABLE TO FREE THAT UP. <br />IT SEEMS ALL BACKWARDS......PULLING ALL MY HAIR OUT <br />PLEASE HELP

Hi and welcome Setterlvr,<br /><br />A remote idea, but possible:<br /><br />There should be a bleed hole in the stat, so that when cold and closed, a limited amount of water still circulates. This bleed hole is also put there to allow air to escape from the head. If air canot escape due to crud, then water will not circulate, except in minute amounts. Have you installed the correct stat, with the bleed hole?<br /><br />I'm guessing that there was crud buildup under the cylinder head cover when you removed it to get at the stat. Maybe there's more crud to be got out elsewhere.<br /><br />Have you tried SaltAway?<br /><br />There are some good experts here - won't be long before someone comes up with another idea.

WHEN I REMOVED THE COVER I CLEANED AND BLEW EVERYTHING OUT...... WHAT IS PERPLEXING IS THAT FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND AS THE MOTOR HEATS UP THEN THE STAT OPENS AND LETS WATER OUT TO COOL....BUT THIS MOTOR IS DOING THE REVERSE....ITS A NEW STAT

You're right in what you say about how the stat should operate. Might be worth testing the stat.<br /><br />Just put it in a pan of cold water and gently heat. The stat should open when the water gets around 63C.
