Hello there,

Just found this site and it seems very useful. If you'll excuse me jumping straight in, i have a couple of questions while i wait for my Clymer manual to arrive.

I have recently bought a 14' motorboat with a Johnson 40HP motor. It's a 2 stroke manual start from 1975 (40RL75C) and i've had to split the gearbox to free up the gear change shaft.

Can anyone tell me what oil i should use when refilling the gearbox and what is the best type of instant gasket sealer to use when reassembling please?

Many thanks,

Roy.

Re: Hi from a newbie and quick question or two

Use only gear oil that is designated for outboards (ie. Evin/John HI-VIS Gearcase Lube or equivilent) since it has some water absorbtion abilities. The gear case halves require round 1/8" rubber seal (spaghetti seal) which can be obtained at your local outboard dealers. You can use a little instant sealer (ie. RTV) to hold the seal in place while putting it back together. Make sure you dap a little at the ends of the seal where it meets the shaft seal. Also replace the nylon washers on the fill and drain screws before you change the oil. Good luck and let us know how it worked.

Re: Hi from a newbie and quick question or two

Hi DD,

Thanks for the speedy reply and top tips, they are very useful. The original rubber seal looks to be in good condition, i was curious whether there was a specific type of instant sealer for marine use but i'll just use what i've got on the shelf.

I don't suppose you'd know what fuel/oil ratio i should be using please?

I'll post some pics if it's possible and you're interested?

Roy.
