1972 Johnson 9.5 shifting problems

Hi <br />I have had this motor all apart and put back together again.<br />i thought i had the whole thing fixed and ready to run for years to come.<br />But now I have shifting problems<br />as soon as I put a load on the engine in forward it jumps out of forward into nuetral. <br />I have tried making some adjustments to the linkages but to no avail <br />it just seems to still not work right.<br />please help<br />any suggestions are welcome <br />thx<br />Jon

Your clutch dog in the gear case may be bad

i have the same problem. if anyone have any suggestion ? .. i plan to change the whole lower unit.

It doesn't make sense to replace the whole lower unit if its just the clutch dog that's bad. Not a hard job to do yourself (with a good manual) or you can have a shop do it. Would be cheaper and easier than replacing the whole unit - with one that may also have a worn clutch dog! The dogs themselves are usually in the $30-$50 range, plus labor. If it's a freshwater motor it shouldn't be too hard to get apart.<br />- Scott<br />- Scott

You may also want to check the shift rod connector link. Make sure the upper shift rod slot is all the way in the link. The slot in the shift rod should line up with the bolt hole in the link before putting the bolt in. Same for the lower shift rod.
