I bought this motor only a week ago, it was as is. and I took it out and it was going very well for about 15 min, then it would suddnly just die, if quick enough I can pull it back to nutral to save it running for a few seconds beofre it quits.
I have now checked the starter, becuase I thought I overheated it, but it seems fine. But the motor is stuck in gear. and it is electicly connceted to the throttle, but I dont' think that this is the reason for it to be quiting on me.

How can I get it out of gear? And what is the major problem? Thanks

Are you sure it's a '76? If it's a '76 it should have a mechanical shift that under normal circumstances should mechanically disconnect the prop from the driveshaft in the neutral postion. However, if you have a pre-'73 115 there is a good chance you have electric shift. In a failure mode the electric shift outboards units would stay in the forward position. The idea was that if it was to fail it would get you back to your destination. Do you possibly have an electric shift that has failed, keeping the l/u in forward?

I think you are asking what's OMC... right? OMC is the now defunct Outboard Marine Corporation, the parent company of the Johnson and Evinrude brands. They went bankrupt in about 2002 and were bought by Bombardier Corp. The Johnson and Evinrude motors are now considered BRP or Bombardier Recreational Products brands.

Anyway, if you are looking to fix your motor, do some searches here under "electric shift" here and you will come up with plenty of information about your type of lower unit. Also, a factory manual is very helpful when getting into this sort of job.
