If I cant find this generator is there some other way to charge the battery.

I have heard that there is a generator that uses you speed through the water to generate power to recharge the battery - sounds pricy.

Solar could ba an option except for the fact the higher the effieciency the higher the cost.

Most of those 40hp Big Twins didn't have the generator, and you really don't need one, frankly. Unless yours has the electric shifter, the only time the outboard uses the battery is to run the starter. A fully charged battery will start that 40 hp dozens and dozens of times, so there wasn't really a need for a generator.

They put them on the electric shift models because the solenoids drew power all the time they were in gear.

What I do is charge my starting battery the day before I go out on the water. The deep cycle battery for my trolling motor is on a smart charger all the time it's off the water.

So, you may not need a generator at all.

Generally speaking, in practice you need to plaster your boat in solar panels to do appreciable charging. The generator setup wasn't very good as it provides no power with the engine at idle, and only 10 amps at full throttle. I'm with CATransplant - get a nice large deep cycle battery, a charger, and forget about it. You can use a deep-cycle battery for starting your engine.

Oh, yeah. When that engine is warm, starting it with the recoil starter isn't all that big a deal. I did it today. My wiring harness plug wasn't making good contact, so I just pulled the recoil starter once and it fired right up.

I removed and re-inserted the plug, though, and my starter was working fine again.
