This is a follow-up post to an earlier overheating episode with an '87 88SPL. After replacing head gaskets, thermostats, and water pump, the motor ran fine for a couple outings, then started misfiring. I noticed sparking at the ground connection for one of the powerpacks while running the motor in the backyard with ear muffs. The bolt at the bottom of the powerpack, which serves as the ground, had loosened to the point where there was no continuity. The bolt apparently had loctite on the threads when originally installed.

Moral of the story is: check the grounds for the powerpacks after overheating.
