24:1 for your '55. One quart per 6 gal's of gas.

Re: oil/fuel for '55 johnson outboard

Could this be right? 24:1? I have a '78 55HP Johnson, and I've been running 40:1 for a couple of years (or at least my father did when he owned it). I'm not trying to be funny or anything. It's possible that I am putting too much oil in the gas. So, can anyone confirm this? Motor runs fine on 40:1, but would 24:1 make it run that much better?

Waiting in anticipation.

from what i've read here.......the older boats use 24:1 and anything made after 1970 or so seem to be 50:1. you can't wreck anything running at 40:1, but you may foul plugs more, and your max speed will decrease. I run my 77 70hp at 50:1 and I think thats what you should be using.

1964 was the year Evinrude and Johnson switched to 50:1

Virginiaboater You should be useing 50:1 mix for your motor. now as for the orignal question at the top I would have to ask if this person is running a 1955 motor or a 55 h/p motor.
Anything pre 1963 should use 24:1 mix
