Do you think a 05 Trophy model 2002 with hard top and 135 optimax is underpowered? What is the top speed with 4 adults and full gas tank.

Yes - it's underpowered. I had a 2003 Trophy 1802 with the Merc 125hp Saltwater and that was just big enough for me. WOT was 42mph with that boat and it was a dry weight of 1900lbs compared to the dry weight of 3500 lbs for the model 2002. I'd suggest at least the 150hp or better yet the 175hp (which is the largest for that boat I believe). I just bought the sister to that boat, a 2005 Trophy 2052 with a 4.3L FWC carbed motor and the extended hard top and it's strong enough. Of course YMMV.

I own an older 93 2002 and have a 150 evinrude on it. I'm very happy with it. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do. Good Fishing

yes I have a 2002 with a 175, and when three people are in the boat you it now planes off nice. you could probably get away with a 150

Every once in a while I have to chime in here when someone asks about a specific boat and motor set up. You get a bunch of opinions, but not from anyone that has the set up in question. I have a 2002 FF with radar arch and a 135 Opti which I put on there after reviewing the performance data with the 135/150 and 175hp Opti's ON THE Trophy FF. There really wasn't much difference hence I went with the less expensive, cleaner burning, more efficent 135. I have no complaints about the performance with either a 17 or 19 pitch prop, full of gas, ice, whatever. The thing sips gas and does close to 40 mph. Cruise at about 3800 rpms and 25 mph uses 7.6 gph. Great set up. My only reservation is if you're going to have a kicker hanging off the back you'd probably want to go with the 175 but I don't know if it would troll slow enough.

I ran a 1996 2002 with a Merc Saltwater Series 150. I was propped correctly (can't remember the specs) but I could hit 51 MPH @ WOT. I cruised at 42 at at 4200 RPM.

You 135 is probably more efficient. You might not reach 47 MPH @ WOT, but you're not supposed to be running WOT all the time anyway. If you can cruis comfortably at 75% of throttle in the 40 MPH range, I'm sure you'll be fine.
