Pulled my boat out of winter hibernation yesterday. All systems checked out except the steering. The steering wheel spins with no resistance at all. I think the axial piston pump in the helm is shot. Has anyone else run into this problem? The unit is a Teleflex Seastar 1.7 Helm, 1000 psi max. The actuator on the engine is in great shape, so I am hoping to replace or rebuild the helm only. The engine is a 1997 Merc 150 HP Offshore.

Same happened to me. Most probably your rack lost a tooth. It's just made out of aluminum. Time for a new cable. I paid $159 for my 15' Teleflex . Get a price on the computer from any company and print it out. West marine will match that price. Good luck. Dennis G., Northern California. 20' Bayliner Trophy. 150 Merc 1984.

OOOPS! Just realized that you don't have a rack & pinion teleflex system. Might be cheaper to install one, though. Regards, D.G.
