5.5 evinrude fisherman

Ok I have been having problems with this engine since I got it. I have rebuilt the carb because it was in pieces when I received it. All parts are there for the carb. I am missing the spring that holds the timing base in the proper location. I am also missing the fuel pump, but that wouldn't keep it from running though. Cylinder compression is at 74 psi for number one and 75 for number two. I have a fat blue spark on both plugs even when barely pulling on the rope. The engine will only start if I spray fuel into the throat of the carb and it takes a few pulls to get anything. When it does start it only runs for about 2 to 3 seconds and the dies. It will do this for about 3 times before I have to prime it again with a spray bottle. I also have to start it with the choke closed. I have tried it with it open , but I have better results with it closed. I have removed and checked the reed valves and they seem new, only a very slight gap. I am not sure where the timing should be set or how to set it on this engine. The points I have set with the indicator dead on the top mark to right about .020 as indicated on the flywheel. The coils and all other ignition components look new and are functioning. I have pulled the head and the pistons are intact and the cylinders look pretty smooth with no evidence of scarring at all. I have checked everything I know to check to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Your explanation of the problem (choke etc) indicates that you've overlooked something in the carburetor area. Did you manually clean the fixed brass high speed jet that is located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber?

Points are to be set to open .020" maximum. Sounds like that's what you did.<br />Have you got the high speed mixture adjustment (bottom one) open 3/4 of a turn or so? Low speed one open 1 and 1/2 or so? When you rebuilt the carb, did you remove the soft metal plug in the top of the carb and directly clean out the idle orifaces? Are you reasonably certain some fuel is getting into the carb? (the float should be set so when you turn the carb upside-down, it's even with the bowl's mating surface on the carb body.

it doesn't have a high speed needle. It has a fixed jet in the bottom of the bowl, and yes that's how i set the float, and yes i removed the plug

also fuel is getting to the carb. i can pump up the bulb and when i pull the bowl screw fuel runs out

It still sounds like fuel starvation to me. If you can prime it and get some life out of it but then nothting else...it just sounds like fuel delivery somwhere. What mix fuel are you using? How do your plugs look after these primed starts? The IGN seems sound enough... -woody74

the plugs are a little wet when i remove them, but i would think it should run a little more than what it does, and it runs real rough

If its too rich then this could very well be the problem...I'm not saying it is...it just seems to fit the bill at this point. In my humble opinion this is where I would look hard at. By the way, what are you priming it with? -woody74

a spray bottle with premix in it 3 to 4 good squirts

The next thing to look at would be that low speed needle then, I'm stumped on the fuel mix thing but it still sounds a little rich because of the rough idle. Try leaning it in a little if you started at 1 1/2turns. This is just a starting point.

I know you said you are getting better results choking. When I prime my 9.5 I have the choke open and right after it turns over I then close the choke. This seems to work for me, I usually have to finess it a bit.
