I am in the process of buying a boat with a 1981 Johnson 150 HP outboard. Just need some general feedback before I drive 400 miles to look at it. (1) Are there common problems? (2) Any items I should look for? (3) What would be a good compression value? (4) Are they gas hogs? (5) Should it push a 18.5' tri-haul boat above 40 MPH ? (6) Are these supposed to be oil injected? (7) Are they a reliable motor? (8) These arn't electric shifts are they? (9) Anything else? Thanks so much, Dave

Howdy Dave.

1. Common problems? Not that I know of.
2. Look for evidence of neglect, water in gearcase.
3. All cylinders should be over 90psi and within a 15psi range.
4. Yes.
5. Yes.
6. No.
7. Yes.
8. Not electric.
9. Get an on-the-water demo. Watch for easy start, good tell-tale stream, smooth idle and accelleration, WOT for 5 minutes without getting overheated. Do not accept a demo without a load on the engine.

That is a crossflow engine, rated at the crank. It is not as strong as the later looper 150s (rated at the prop), uses more fuel. That said, it was a very good engine for 1981.
