'03 Johnson 90 hp O/B won't go into reverse - help!

Have a new ('03) Johnson OB mounted on a 17' ski boat. When we've run a bit it begins to be a problem getting it to shift into reverse. Has happened twice now in the last three outings. Middle one was OK. Can this be fixed by adjusting the idle on the engine to get it to idle lower so gear shifting can take place easier? Or is there another problem?

Easy to check.<br /><br />Make sure the engine is actually capable of going into reverse. This is done by disconnecting the gear shift cable from the engine. Shift it- manually.<br /><br />If the engine is OK, I would concentrate on your shifter/box. Loose components in shifter boxes can cause all kinds of problems.
