Hi all, first post and I've just spent probably an hour and a half enjoying this website... it's really super... JMHO

Anyway, I just got this old Johnson that was my dad's and it's been sitting for probably 10 years and I want to bring it up to new (as possible) specs... I've got the time to do it and I hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

First of all I don't have a clue as to what year it even is or any of the specification of this fine old motor. Need all I can get as I'm sure you folks understand. The number on the tag is: 45GG-9015A Serial 54C357

This motor was running when it was put up but due to the stale gas smell in the tank I already know what I've gotta do there and for the carb... and I'm guessing (not sure) but I should probably open up the lower end to check the water pump before going too far with getting it running? Anyway, any advice or specs or other info regarding this great old motor will be most appreciated, it was my dads baby so I want to do it right...

Thanks for reading this
Behoof aka Skipb

Ahoy, Skip.

Welcome aboard. :)

Your model number doesn't look like a Johnson number to me. I suspect you have a Gale built engine with cover from its twin Johnny.

That shouldn't be a problem once you get the correct year identified, as the parts are mostly interchangable.

One of our better equipped helpers should be along shortly.

Good luck. :)

Re: 5hp 45GG-9015A Rebuild/Restore

45GG-9015A is a 1954 5hp twin cylinder outboard Gale built for Montgomery Wards, who sold it as a 'Sea King'.

The Gale 5hp engines were based off the old Johnson TN/TD series 5hp outboards from the 40s and early 50s. These durable little outboards seem to have survived better than any others from that era, which I think testifies to their reliability and quality.

Unfortunately, the 5hp seems to be just out of the parts availability envelop (onto bizspeak today??) so some things are a little tricky like carb kits or replacement points. But there are some inventive solutions to these problems you'll be able to find here.

The 5hp engines don't have a conventional water pump. Rather, it is located behind the propeller and has nothing much like a normal impeller. I've seen replacement reproduction parts at /www.grove.net/~noff/marx.html, but generally if the water pump is working there's no need to service this one.

Hope this helps!
