How do I find year of motor?

Hi, I have a 40HP Johnson Super SeaHorse and I am trying to find out what year it is. I can't find any serial or model numbers on it. There is a plate on the side but if there was something on it, it is no longer there. Am I just looking in the wrong place? I think it is a motor from the 70's. Is there some mark that I can just tell what year it is? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hi i have the same engine as you and the plate with the model number and serial numbers is on the part that ties the motor down to the boat, i forget what its called but its between both tightening bolts and does not turn with the engine, once you have the number just bring it in to your dealer and they will tell you what year it is, get back to me to let me know how you make out or if you have anymore questions regarding this motor

It's called the transom clamp, and should have the model number and serial number stamped on it.
