Johnson 175 V6 ´86

Hi,<br /><br />checked impeller and it looked almost as new. <br />Was probably changed at some point. However, there were some worn in the cup, so did change that and the seals. <br /><br />Got lower unit back in place but used old exhaust seals (not very tight anymore but undamaged).<br />Made test run and burned some fogging oil out after winter (with muffs). <br />Now I can see some dark oil leaking out from lower unit joint to rig. I suspect it's from exhaust and mixture of fogging and 2-stroke oil.<br /><br />Questions; if the exhaust joint is not tightly sealed, is it causing problems? What could cause?<br />Should I change the exhaust seals before putting it to water as will lift the boat up next time in autumn?<br /><br />Thanks for any advise - Kai

Welcome to iboats Kais!!<br /><br />When you took the impeller out, would the blades of the impeller straighten out once removed from the cup or did they stay bent round, like they would be in the cup? If they stayed round, it would be a good idea to replace the impeller. The impeller loses it's memory after a period of time and it's effeicency as a pump dwindles. At some point, it will get to the place where it may pump only at increased rpms or not at all. It it's not known when the impeller was changed out last, change it out. If it were me, I would put a whole new pump kit in which includes updated housing and cup.<br /><br />If the exhaust seal is questionable, put a new one in. The seal is there mainly to keep exhaust gasses from getting into the water pump housing....which in theory could stop the pump from pumping water.

OBJ,<br /><br />thanks for the quick response.<br /><br />Impeller was bouncy and not in bad shape at all. Therefore I took it to the local dealer just in case to ask them as it looked pretty good.<br />I bought the whole housing (bottom plate and cup) and all 3 seals needed.<br /><br />I guess I will by the sealants (round 35 euros = ~$30) and pull the lower unit off once again to change them.
