Here is my problem; After running my 2000, johnson 150hp Ocean Pro at cruising speed for about 15- 20 mins, when I bring it back to idle it makes a strange squeeking or whinning noise in and out of gear. After it has been at idle for 5-10 mins the noise slowly subsides and goes away. the noise is not loud and I cannot seem to locate the area of the engine it is comming from. I have duplicated the noise 5 or 6 times. the engine has approx 200 hrs on it.Any Suggestions??

Welcome!!

Interesting. Good thought but those motors dont have head gaskets. Does the noise change any at all from neutral to in/out of gear?

Re: Strange Noise

Well check the blinker fluid then! I'm going to go bang my head on the wall now. You COULD still get a leak at the cyl. to head joint though right? I'm thinking car motors again...

Re: Strange Noise

The Noise is the same in and out of gear, or I should say was, I read a post on another motor that was having the same problem or similar (Not a johnson) so I took the boat for another run today and when it began making the noise I sprayed some 6 in 1 lube into the area that where the driveshaft is exposed just beneith the cowling and the squeek emediately went away, ran for another half hour and it never came back. Now I wonder what the problem may be or may have been.

See? CK was right. The blinker fluid WAS low.

When was the water pump changed last?

Re: Strange Noise

Well, its time for another at any rate. Lets hope the d/shaft splines got greased good. I'd suggest dropping the gearcase and regrease the splines even if you chose not to change the pump.

Good luck!
