Starts, but won't stay running

I just bought a '78 6hp Seahorse. Ran great when demo'd, and started pretty well the first time tonight (a few days later). But it eventually stalled. When restarting, I have to have coke full on, and throttle wide open. If I manually open the coke just a hair, I can get it to run a bit longer, but not reliably. What's up? Carb? Fuel pump? vaccuum?

Also, what should compression be? I've got a tester, might as well give it a try.

Bill, Welcome to iboats!! ;)

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carb. Rebuild kits are cheap and easy to install. A service manual will walk you thru the steps to maintain your motor. If this is a 'new to you' motor, be sure you replace the water pump impeller, you don't want the motor to run hot and cause piston-cylinder damage. Get the carb cleaning and water pump done first, then you can address any additional issues, if needed. It would be a good idea to drain and replace the lower unit lube too.
