1973 85hp evinrude wont start

i have a 1973 evinrude 85hp.when bought it was supposed to only have a bad coil pack.dont know if coil pack is bad.the motor turns over the fly wheel spins.tested spark plugs for fire.two fire strong.the other two fire,but not as strong.put gas in one sylender it started but died after a second.took carborater off and cleaned.dont know whats wrong.had a friend look at it.he said it might be the switch box.(box with all the wires screwed to it,facing away from boat.)need steps to try to figure out whats wrong.also tried puting gas in sylender again,but would not start again.tried ever thing that i know.

Welcome to iboats. There are things that you must do when acquiring a used engine. Number one is to get a manual. You can order one here (top left on this page)or go to the library until it is received and see if they have one for your engine. Use the search function at the topof the page and check threads on won't start. I would go through the FAQ's first if it were me. Check these out and then get back to us. I would assume that the carbs probably need rebuilt and you still may have a bad powerpack. Make sure you test compression before you try other stuff. If you have a bad cylinder you are wasting time with other checks.
