Default Evinrude 5PK stalls after a minute or so

posted July 23, 2005 10:29 AM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey guys, A problem from the netherlands. I have an Evinrude from 1965 motornumber: 5502S B1761.When i start it it runs, but dies shorly after. The carburator is rebuild today with all new components and is very clean and all channels are open including the jets and under the small lid on top of the carburator. I have read a lot of posts now but the carburator seems fine, altough it seems to be leaking a bit from the input mouth, but is should not do this because of the rebuild of the carb and tye correct float level. Now i im a bit at a loss!! Furter information:When the engine stalls first one of the cylinders stops working and the plugs look a little wet. Is the a way to see if the pressure of the fuel pump is too high? I cannot explain the floating of the carb. I must admit that the old cork floater is still used, but i cannot find another here in the netherlands. how can i check the float level in a working machine?Someone has drilled holes in the glassfiber cover for the same reason?? There seems to be no air filter, no air input and no fuel filter?? Yes,i know, a lot of questions, but otherwise i would try to solve this myself, but i'm not an expert in outboard (yet). Please, any input is welcome because the summer is getting smaller... Greetings to all of you,Gerard Ranft.Holland.

I can't pinpoint your problem from the information you listed. However, a 40 year old cork float is not very reliable. If you can't get a new metal or plastic float, somehow thoroughly dry the cork float and coat it thoroughly with epoxy. Then go to "SEARCH" in this forum and request "adjusting float".

Well gentlemen, i've repaired the float by drying it and seal it with PVC glue and measured the float level. The fuellevel is about half the height of the floaterbowl.De motor keeps running BUT much smokes and it sounds too rich to me. sometimes running one one cylinder as well. what should i do next? it still runs VERY bad and does not reach any high rpm.... it still does not run on stationair rpm though the carb IS clean.Any things i've forgot? Thanks in advance for some solid advice.
