Having problems getting my engine to idle fast enough. Throttle cable was adjusted to keep engine running. If I attempt to run with cable disconnected it will die. SELOC manual does not explain the function of the screw in the red box (in the image). Even if I adjust this full cw it does not open the throttle plates at all. I have left it as is.

There are no adjustments on the carbs per the manual. All have fixed jets, I believe.

I am missing something here and any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Re: 82 Evinrude 115 idle adjustment

Hi, welcome to iboats.
The first thing you need to do is get a shop manual and do a link and synch procedure.
With out a manual, you will never be able to adjust it properly.
During idle on this engine, the butterflies will be in the closed position. The screw you are refering to, does adjust the idle through the timing, however this is the last step when doing a link and synch, and the idle is adjusted with the boat in the water in gear with the engine warmed up.
As for the jets, they are fixed. You also may need to do a carb rebuild.

Re: 82 Evinrude 115 idle adjustment

Basscat,

Thanks for your reply.

I have the SELOC manual and have read through the link n' sync procedure, that's why I asked about this adjustment screw because the manual doesn't explain it very well.

I have rebuilt the carbs and really did not find much wrong with them. I'm going to check if the jets are correct for todays gas.

I want to understand what you are saying. With throttle plates closed, this engine should idle properly? The adjustment highlighted may change the timing at idle, but does not move the throttle plates.

Greg
