waterpump/overheating

I recently purchased a 1966 Geneva that was manufactured in Hudson Mich. with a 1966 Evinrude 80hp 2cycle.4cylinder.I had it running for a little bit and the eng. hot light came on and there was water shooting out like it supposed to ,here is the waterpump located and would that be my problem?? I'm a rookie about boats this is my 1st boat

Welcome trex!<br /><br />When the hot light came on, did you feel the flat place ontop of the engine just in front of the heads? Or was it really hot? <br /><br />The water pump is mounted on top of the lower unit. You would have to drop the lower unit to access it. <br /><br />The engine is also equipped with t-stat(s). Can't remember if one or two. Look at the back of the engine. You will see the flat exhaust cover plate. Look to the bottom of the cover plate. There will be a box mounted to the engine. That's where the stat is. They (?) could be stuck closed.
