Fill the tank. Don't mind how much it is.<br /><br />Go for a typical cruise and burn almost all your fuel, noting both how far (distance) and how long (time) you go.<br /><br />Then fill her up again and this time take notice of the amount of fuel.<br /><br />Now you know how much fuel it took to do that much sailing.

Yez - agree with Bo<br /><br />BUT... you have to make your own test to know how YOUR rig performs. <br /><br />In Sweden there is a regular test/review of certain motor/boat combos, but those are only for guidance and comparison. It's hard to reach the same results in real life.<br /><br />State your boat & motor and I'll look it up in one of those publications.. or a close match.

Rule of thumb<br />horsepower divided by 10 equals gallons per hour at WOT. More accurate than that use a remote tank, fill it to the top, run at cruise for 6 minutes, refill tank amount x 10 equals gallons per hour. Each boat/motor/loading/sea conditions/wind/fuel quality/plug condition/temperature/water temp/bottom fouling/etc... will affect results.

your gph will change based on rpms. you can mess around, burning lots of fuel at different rpms, but do you really want to do that? pick up several copies of "boating magazine". every month they do a dozen or so "short tests", which are simply 1/2 page reviews of different boats and engines. they provide a great graph showing mph, kts, gph, noise, range, etc at different rpm points. you'll be able to find a test that closely matches your rig.
