I bought a 1989 lowe boat with a 70 horse 1989 Johnson VRO outboard. The oil injection line is capped, so I have to mix my own oil. This is not uncommon and better, I believe. The motor performs very well, but there seems to be a heavy white smoke at idle and cruising speeds. There might be a slight hesitation when pusing throttle, very slight. Is it just maybe running rich ? any ideas? There is a good strong discharge of water from the water pump. I am just wondering if I should spend money on the motor, like get the carb. cleaned etc... This is why I am asking. Do you know if Johnson has a faq or message board for there motors only. thanks

Re: 89 johnson outboard with white smoke

How clean are the cylinder and plugs? If it's pure white smoke I'd be concerned with an internal water leak.

But 2-strokes do smoke a LOT anyway. What mixture are you using?
