Danger in Decarbing Older Motor

I have a 1984 Evinrude 115 which I have just rebuilt the carbs on. I want to run a can of Seafoam Deep Creep through the engine while I still have it apart. My question is: Is there any risk in decarbing a motor which may have never been decarbed before?

Mine had never been done before I got it, 7years, and all the the carbon junk messed up my recirculation valves.

I would inspect the chambers first, mulv80. If there is a lot of carbon I would mechanically remove what I could before a chemical treatment.

Good luck. :)

I had a similar concern before I decarbed my '63 75HP Evinrude. As far as I know it had never been done in it's 41 years. I read about 100 "decarb" posts and couldn't find any documented risk factors - so I went for it. Did the engine wonders. I highly recommend it.

A dumb question, but what procedure is done to decarb these motors? I'm sure my 77 hasn't seen any internal cleaning.

Can the chemicals be bought at a local auto parts store, like Sea Foam?

Sea Foam Deep Creep is one of the better decarbonizing agents, and you folks can get it from your NAPA autoparts stores. Check out roscoe's decarb FAQ in the Engine Repair FAQ Forum.

EDIT: I forgot - Iboats sells it too.
