i have trouble starting when cold or not. had tuned up but still same problem. would dirty carb be the culprit. Any suggestions.

Compression should be 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Is it?<br /><br />With the spark plugs removed, the spark on all cylinders should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Does it?<br /><br />Is the fuel primer solenoid working properly? To test, pump up fuel primer bulb, remove one of the small fuel primer hoses at the carburetor area, then turn the key to the ON position and press the key in. Fuel should shoot out that hose.<br /><br />If the above checks out okay, and if the engine has been sitting for awhile off and on, the most likely cause is fouled carburetors.
