I had a main upper bearing go out on my 86 Johnson 50hp lower unit. When I removed the bearing housing the bearing was in pieces. Could someone tell me witch way the conical bearing needs to be pressed on the driveshaft? The bearing needs to be presssed from the top of the shaft down. I think the cone is to be pointed down to sit in the outer race...and keep the driveshaft from dropping to the lower gear case...but i am not sure. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I hope the pro's correct me if I'm wrong, but when you replace the drive shaft & thrust bearing, you can not just take the old one out & put the new one in. The drive shaft should be removed and shimmed correctly with the new bearings and then reinstalled.
