Evinrude shift adjustment

My Dad has a 1996 90 hp evinrude that doesn't shift from fowd to neut everytime as it should. He replaced the lower unit oil and now has some difficulty with reverse and over reving. It would appear it needs adjustment at the engine. Is there any way to find out where the setting should be in order to confirm if this is the problem and/or make the necessary adjustments? Thanks!

60 degree or 90 degree V4? The 90 degree V4 should be set by placing the control lever in farward gear 3/4 throttle, shift engine into farward gear, adjust shift cable end to just slip over the connector, at engine end. After adjustment check neutral and reverse for engagement. Sloppy control cables and wear on the control box will also cause this problem.

Clanton<br /><br />Thanks for the help. I am not certain if it is a 90 or 60 degree v4 but we will try the adjustment you suggest and see if it takes care of the problem.

Well I have determined the 90 hp is a 60 degree. So I guess it is back to the drawing board. Any additional help would appreciated. Thanks

From my own experiences with my uncles 90hp Johnson...<br /><br />1) Has there always been some sort of shifting problem since your dad has been the owner?<br /><br />2) Has the lower unit been removed for water pump servicing etc.<br /><br />3) If yes to either 1 or 2, the shift rod may be out of adjustment. <br /><br />4) I'm not an expert by any means but we had a similar problem which was corrected by dropping the gearcase and setting the shift rod to the proper specs found in the manual. Hope this helps. :)

Also, we only went that route after exhausting our adjustment options with the cable.

manually shift motor foward and reverse<br />did it shift??<br />put control forward gear wot shift lower unit into forward adjust cable so it goes on pin<br />shift to nuetral<br />shift arm should be straight up and down<br />if not shift rod is at wrong height<br />if it is run motor adjust cable for equal handle movement nuetral to forward nuetral to reverse<br />if this doesn't work and cable does not have excessive play the clutch dog may be damaged

Thanks guys. Marinemech1 should the engine be running when the manual shift test is attempted? And I assume the cables are detached when attempting the manual shift. What if it does not shift manually?
