I'm working on a 1962 5.5 johnson. I was able to remove the flywheel with a puller and I am wondering how you replace the coils and remove the ignition unit(the part underneath the flywheel). It appears that the entire housing of the unit must come off to replace the coil and spark wire. Is this correct? Does the ignition unit pull straight up off the drive shaft? If so, the plate is either stuck or I have no clue how to release the ignition unit from the block.<br />If not, how do you replace the coil and remove the unit? Any help on both (coil replacement and ignition unit removal) would appreciated.

There are four phillip head screw holding the head to the swivel base. They are around the inside of the plate. Just screw them out until lose. It'll help to remove the cam also and disconnect the magneto plate arm from the throttle tower arm.
