40 HP Johnson starter spring

I've replaced smaller motor springs, but this is very difficult because it's heaver. Is there a <br />"secret" Motor is an old -1970? 40 HP Johnson.<br />tks<br />Tom

Welcome to Iboats!<br /><br />Not really. There was a special jig available to wind them up. But I just fold them into pull start housing, catch the loop in the end with the pin on the rope pulley, and reinstall the pulley. Then wind it up 3 full turns and then as much necessary to drop a pin in through the little hole in the pulley to the housing to keep it wound. Finally I install the pull start rope.<br />Easier said than done though!<br />Good luck!
