On my Johnson 50 (yr 2000)my tachometer is operating very irratically. At high throttle it does not read more than 1000 rpm.
Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot?
Someone has told me that if the engine is not generating, than the tach does not function well.
How do I tell if the engine is generating? ((No ammeter on board)

Buy a $10.00 AC/DC voltmeter from a hardware/auto supply store. Perhaps, you already have one.

Put the red terminal on the + term. of the battery, the black on the - term, of the battery.

Record the voltage.

While running, the voltmeter should read above base batt. voltage, if it is charging.
