The shift rod is one piece (not two piece like the earlier motors). You have to disconnect it, as breton says, under the starter motor.

Are there a lot of deposits present on the motor? I had one last year that I really had to wrestle with to get out. It turned out that there was a lot of built up crud in the shift rod tube.
