I have an 85 HP Johnson outboard that will run fine but will not shift into nuetral or reverse. Whatever I do it stays locked in forward. If anyone can be of assistance I would appreciate it.

Also I was wondering if you tell the year from the serial # the serial number is J3031689

Jim

The model is a 85ESL69E

Re: 85 HP Johnson

Welcome to iboats. :)

To give you the year, we need the model number. But it sounds to me like an electric shift model between 1968 and 1972. Those are made to run in forward if there is a problem with the shifting system. It's usually a problem with getting power to the shift switch if it won't shift out of neutral at all. Also, check your gearlube. If the level is too low, it won't shift.

You might also have one that requires the different gear lube to operate the hydro-electric shift mechanism, Jim.

Let us know the model number. Without that we are only guessing.
