i'm looking at buying a 96 evinrude 40 tiller with a push button, not key, start (located back of the tiller arm). the current owner mentioned that it is hard starting on cold mornings and would have to remove the engine cover to choke it as it has no external choke lever. could it have some type of automatic choking system that is malfunctioning and if so, is this a common problem? any repair suggestions appreciated.

Re: evinrude tiller choke question

Is the motor a converted tiller motor or did it come from the factory? That motor should have a primer - not a choke. If it's electric start, it ought to have an electric primer. This would be a small black cylinder, approximately the size of a roll of Toonies., with a small red lever at one end and a wire & some hoses coming out of it. It may need to be hooked up to work.

It's also possible that the motor has a manual primer, which would be a small black metal and plastic piece with a plunger and some hoses coming out of it. In either case, the primer may not be working, or may be missing entirely.

- Scott
